Children’s
Literature
0-8 years old
Wordless Picture Books
Illustrated Chapter Books
Early Chapter Books
Easy Readers
Novels with little to no Illustration
Middle
Grade/Tween
8-12 years old
Usually
mistaken with Middle School which is 11-13 years old and they usually have a
hard time finding books because the Middle
Grade is too young and the Young
Adult is too old
Young Adult
13-18 years
old
Need
to watch out on topics and language, many times Young Adult and New Adult books
can overlap again making it difficult on what is appropriate for their age.
New Adult
18-30 years
old
This
was created in 2009 by St. Martin’s Publishing when they had a writing contest
looking for fiction with protagonist that is older than young adult and appeals
to adults. Usually books of this type are dealing with kids learning to adapt
to life after high school, independence, and more adult issues.
Reflection
Learning about the young and new adult was new
to me, I had no idea they did that and to know how it came about. Also learning
the difference between middle grade and middle school was great to know because
I know many people including me who make that mistake of clumping them
together.
