Poetry

Not a genre. It is a format.
Can be found in many different genres
·         Fantasy
·         Historical Fiction
·         Realistic Fiction
·         Traditional Literature
Novels in verse and poetry aren’t the same.
Form and format are similar.

Criteria for Evaluating Poetry for Children

1.       Is the subject something children should be familiar with?
a.       Children that relate to poems enjoy them more.
2.       Does it have imagery?
a.       Having the 5 senses provides images for children to picture in their head as they read the poem and makes it more enjoyable.
3.       Does it rhyme?
a.       Children tend to love things that rhyme and you may have to scaffold at first.
b.      Later they can appreciate over forms that don’t.
4.       How is the rhythm used?
a.       Though it’s not necessary many poems have a natural or forced rhythm. \
5.       What role does sound play?
a.       Alliteration
b.      Consonance
c.       Assonance
d.      Onomatopoeia

Reflection
Poetry is a format that I find difficult to relate too because of the fact that I don’t use these criteria to find a poem for myself. I need to be able to take these into consideration when evaluating poems for children and young adults. Poem can cover some serious subject and really help with the development of adolescence.
