AKA contemporary realistic fiction (CRF) or modern realistic fiction (MRF)

Setting are in contemporary or modern times

They are believeable

Everything in story is consistent with real world

Characters, settings and events are real

Criteria for Evaluating Realistic Fiction for Children

1.     Is everything consistent with real world in which contemporary kids live?

a.     Speech, behavior, and every element must be believable and reflect world

b.     Keep a close eye on gender and cultural elements

c.      Avoid stereotypes

2.     Does the theme emerge naturally? Does it avoid being preachy or didactic?

a.     Encompass more than one theme

b.     Should slowly emerge and be consistent

3.     How does the topic or subject relate to modern readers?

a.     Tackles sensitive topics

                                                              i.      Death and los

                                                            ii.      Sexuality

                                                          iii.      Sexual orientation

                                                         iv.      Changing family structure

b.     Topics that were once taboo are becoming subjects of books 

Reflection

Getting confused with realistic fiction and other sub-genres that are similar happen every day. I know in my teachings, I already see how I’ve wronged my students in misleading them on certain titles. Knowing the criteria once again brings clarity to not only us librarians but can also help teachers. Realistic fiction should be more carefully looked at because of the fact that they cover such serious subjects now.
