Historical Fiction

Any story that is set in the past which depends on the age of the students. History is different for every child. This sub-genre allows readers the opportunity to have a vicarious experience.

Criteria for Evaluating Historical Fiction for Children

1.      Does the story blend the history in it effortlessly?

a.      We know a story may be set in the past, but look at the connections and events that occur.

2.      Are the historical facts accurate?

a.      Reviews, other resources, and the Council on Books for Children will help verify.

3.      How are values of time brought to life?

a.      Need to have some things valued differently from contemporary times

4.      Is everything consistent with the social aspect?

a.      Clothing

b.      Architecture

c.       Music

d.      Speech patterns

5.      Does the theme of the story relate to contemporary readers?

a.      Theme is universal in nature

Reflection

This sub-genre can be difficult to fit into many children’s reading lists. Many children don’t view historical fiction as interesting because they feel it will only be informational. I feel that knowing these criteria and making criteria for children to be able to look for. Also making them knowledgeable about historical fiction would also help.
