At ten years old, Kenny has no idea what he would be experiencing as he takes a trip to visit Grandma in Birmingham, Alabama. At a time where rights were in question along with race, the family is forced to take harsh measures on his older brother Byron, due to behavior, to live with grandma for the summer and possibly the next year. However, in 1963 a tragedy shakes the entire nation, having a major and direct effect on the family. This novel depicts how a young boy tries to make sense of what is really going on in the world. Readers may feel anger and angst as he struggles to understand why and what happens in Birmingham. The family bond is tested and for Kenny he doesn’t understand why his parents aren’t telling him everything, but through this his brother steps in. Kenny’s journey helps him discover that the world may not be perfect, but he should always keep pushing forward to make a change.
