It is usually more socially acceptable for a girl to keep a diary, however this entire novel is about how a boy keeps a diary for four years of his life. He expresses all his feelings and is able to fully open up about all the obstacles going on in his life. This will help the male readers see that it is okay to show how you really feel or at least find a way to different way to release frustrations. The author is constantly flipping back and forth from his life to his diary and everything is written according to his age. A reader grows with him, feels like a second grader, bonds with Mr. Findley, gets upset when dad forgets to call, is sad that mom has to work extra hours, you become enthralled with his life and hope it will be better for him after.
